Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, who led the rebirth of Judaism and Jewish communal life in Kishinev, Moldova, passed away.
By COLlive reporter
Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Kishinev, Moldova passed away on Friday, 29 Sivan, 5774.
He was 86.
Rabbi Abelsky led the rebirth of Judaism and Jewish communal life in Kishinev, the capital of Moldova, which is known as a place of terrible pogroms which were perpetrated against the Jews at the turn of the century.
Now an independent republic, under the leadership of Rabbi Abelsky, these tragic scenes have happily given way to scenes of a vibrant, spirited Jewish life.
Rabbi Abelsky, together with his wife Leah, came to Kishinev in 1990 from their home in Israel, to rebuild Jewish life after the fall of the communist regime.
Natives of Russia, the Abelskys lived in Israel for over 40 years, but in spite of age and family ties, they rallied to the call to rebuild Jewish Moldova.
Leaving their children and grandchildren in Israel, they arrived in Kishinev as Shluchim, to bring about an awakening of the Jewish spirit in a place where it had lain dormant for nearly a century.
Although many of the young Jews of Moldova had emigrated to Israel and a variety of other Western countries, the Abelskys led the community of 10,000 Jews in Moldova, caring for their spiritual and physical needs.
Rabbi Abelsky set out to rebuild the devastated Jewish community and to restore to the Jews of Kishinev their identity as Jews. Against all odds, he established a flourishing day school with 300 full time students (Jewish Secondary School #15), a day care center, a summer camp ("Gan Yisroel"), and a program of adult education courses.
He is survived by his wife, Leah and children Bluma Nachshon, Rochel Madanchik, Chani Zalmanov, Zushe Abelsky, Shmerel Abelsky and Yossi Abelsky.
He was predeceased by his son Moshe Abelsky obm.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rabbi Zalman Tuvya HaKohen Abelsky, Shliach and Chief Rabbi of Moldova. He was 86 ● Full Story
30 Sivan 5774 (28.06.2014)
Rabbi Abelski was born in Russia in 5688 (1928), as the Communists were tightening their grip on the nation. There, he studied in secret Yeshivos established by Chasidim until after the war, when he was able to esape the country, and went to learn in Yeshivas Tomchei Tmimim in the DP camp of Pocking.
Soon afterwards, the Previous Rebbe sent him on a secret Shlichus to Communist Romania.
In the year 5710, he traveled to the United States, and then to Eretz Yisroel the next year. Once there, he began working with the "Reshet" Oholei Yosef Yitzchak network of schools.
In 5720, he was sent by the Rebbe on Shlichus to the city of Kiryat Gat, where he established the "Oholei Yosef Yitzchak" school, around which eventually grew a large Chabad community. He also began giving Shiurim in Kibbutzim all around the South of Israel.
During Simchas Torah 5731, when the Rebbe famously established his own "United Nations," and appointed particular Chosid as the "Baal HaBayis" of each country, the Rebbe chose R' Abelsky to be the "Baal HaBayis" of Romania. Since R' Abelsky was not present at the time, the Rebbe asked his son to say L'chaim in his place.
In Shvat 5747, as he was passing by Dollars, the Rebbe told him, "Bless Yidden, and I will bless them," from which point he began to give out blessings, as per this unique instruction of the Rebbe.
In the summer of 5749, he was asked to travel on Shlichus to Kishinev, Moldova. He, in turn, asked the Rebbe, who immediate gave his encouragement and blessing. There, he immediately began a slew of activities on behalf of the community, and quick built strong connections with local politicians and government figures, through which he was able to receive much assistance in his work.
